Mother Day

Antioch of Liberty City’s recent Mother’s Day recognition in honor of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson

Submitted by Lady Estella King-Bryant

In the Black community, the tradition of “taking care of our own” is a strong part of African American culture. Mother’s Day is the one holiday that honors not just mothers, but all the ways that the Black community creates and builds families. Many Black children have been raised by mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, aunts, older sisters, cousins, family friends, and foster mothers, and adopted formally and informally, and they use Mother’s Day to salute these women.

ANTIOCH MBC BAPTIST CHURCH OF LIBERTY CITY, not only honored Mothers who represent African American heritage but also the 2022 legacy of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.

As we reflect back to the 2022 hearing of Judge Jackson, we remember the words of Senator Cory Booker. In his speech, Mr. Booker said the harsh line of questioning against a Black woman didn’t come as a shock.

“It’s hard for me not to look at you and not see my mom, not to see my cousins — one of them who had to come here and sit behind you,” Mr. Booker said. “She had to have your back. I see my ancestors and yours.” “Nobody’s gonna steal that joy,” Mr. Booker said in his speech. “Nobody’s taking this away from me.” Mr. Booker ended his speech by calling Judge Jackson his “harbinger of hope.” He continued: “This country is getting better and better and better. When that final vote happens, and you ascend on to the highest court in the land, I’m gonna rejoice.” “The greatest country in the world, the United States of America, will be better because of you.” South Florida is in a better place because of Judge Jackson. Judge Jackson represents South Florida and its educational journey. Judge Jackson attended local schools and was active in her community.

The mothers and women of Antioch wore special BLACK WOMEN ARE SUPREME t-shirts in honor of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as a tribute to the heart and soul of the proud women she represents. We will keep her and our country in our prayers.
